A Silver color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height overall consisting of a shield blazoned:  Azure, a saltire Gules fimbriated Argent intertwined with a chevron inverted Argent (Gray), in chief a dogwood blossom Argent, seeded Or fimbriated Sable.  Attached below a Red scroll doubled silver and inscribed "DEATH TO TYRANTS" in Silver letters.

The service of the former organization, the 183d Infantry, is indicated by the colors blue and white which represent Infantry. The red and white St. Andrews Cross recalls service in the War of 1812.  The gray chevron on the blue background represents service in the 29th Infantry Division. The chevron, of a type worn in earlier times, reflects the significance of the traditional role of the citizen soldier in maintaining combat readiness in order to protect the nation.  The dogwood, state flower of Virginia, symbolizes the unit’s home station.

The distinctive unit insignia was originally approved for the 183d Infantry Regiment on 10 October 1986.  It was redesignated for the 183d Regiment on 5 May 1997.  The insignia was redesignated for the 183d Cavalry Regiment on 1 June 2006.  The symbolism was amended 14 July 2023.
